Barbara J. “Barb” Helms, 74, of Walton, passed away at her home early Thursday morning. She was born May 27, 1942 in Cass County to Joseph R. and Martha J. (Griffin) Lybrook. She married Thomas W. “Tom” Helms on Oct. 15, 1961 in Deacon and he preceded her in death on Sept. 20, 2014.
Barb was a farm wife and worked along side her husband Tom on the family farm. She served as a board member for the Cass Co. 4H Fair and was a member of the Sugar and Spice Home Ec. Club in Galveston and Young America. She was crowned the 1960 Hosier Hampshire Queen at the Indiana State Fair of which she was very proud. She also enjoyed playing Bunko. Her grandchildren and her family were the pride of her life.
Surviving family include her children, Dave (Tara) Helms, Galveston; Challi (Dave) Pullen, Walton; and Mark Helms, Walton; her grandchildren, Levi (Krista) Pullen, Aubrey Pullen, Ross Helms, Wyatt Helms and John Helms. She has one great grandchild, Knox Pullen and another one on the way. Barb was also survived by an honorary brother George Greer along with his family. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Tom.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, May 1, 2017 at Walton Christian Church, 103 Bishop Street in Walton with Rev. Bill Collins officiating. Burial will follow at Galveston Cemetery. Visitation will take place from 2 – 6 pm Sunday, April 30th at Walton Christian Church and one hour before services on Monday. Memorial contributions may be given to the Cass County Community Foundation, In care of the Helms Family Scholarship fund.
