Barbara "Barb" Jean (Harlow) Meek

April 23, 1948 ~ January 16, 2017 (age 68) 68 Years Old

Barbara (Barb) Jean (Harlow) Meek, 68, of Walton, passed away at 12:44 a.m. Monday, January 16th, 2017, after a long fight with Alzheimer’s. She was born April 23, 1948 to Walter J. and Helene Harlow of Dayton, Ohio.  She married Carlos (Dean) Meek on Sept. 30, 1967, who survives her.

Barb and Dean started their lives together serving in the US Air Force.  As a military wife, she traveled to many places, including Anchorage, Alaska and Guam, settling down in Walton, IN in 1982.  She was a member of the American Legion Post #418 Women’s Auxiliary in Walton, IN, where  she and her loving husband spent their time after work together.  She loved to play pull tabs and spend time with good friends.  She enjoyed researching family history, collecting many documents over the years.

Barb was a member of the Shiloh Lutheran Church.  She was a fun loving prankster who was affectionately known as “The General” at Girl Scout camp.   She was a troop leader and was a great influence on many in her troop.  She was a role model and maternal figure for many people over the years.  She was also an animal lover.

Barb and Dean were life partners, including building Deano’s Pizzeria together, where she was a delivery driver until her illness made it impossible for her to continue.  She was active in the community and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Barb is survived by her brothers, Barry Harlow and his wife Carol, Slippery Rock, PA; Richard Harlow and his wife, Pat, Lansing, MI; her sister, Robin (Harlow) Sammon and her husband, Daniel, Beavercreek, OH; her sister in-law, Jane Harlow, Ann Arbor, MI.   Barb is also survived by her three children, William Joseph Meek, Peru, IN; Jonathan Dean Meek, Walton, IN; and Christina Helene (Meek) and her husband Adam Whitney, Walton, IN.  She had eight grandchildren, Jacob, Jesse, Joshua, William Joseph Meek Jr., Christian Meek, Brodrick Meek, Logan Whitney, Brooke Whitney and three great grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her parents, one sister, Patricia (Harlow) McCord, one brother David Harlow and one daughter, Donna Sue.

Visitation will be held from 2 – 5 p.m. Thursday, January 19th at Murray Weaver Funeral Home in Galveston with a memorial service at 5:00 p.m. with Pastor William Allison officiating.  Immediately following services a celebration will be held at the Walton American Legion Post #418 in Walton.  Barb’s ashes will be interred at a later date in Dayton, Ohio.  Murray Weaver Funeral Home in Galveston assisted her family with arrangements. www.murrayweaverfuneralhome.com
