Gertrude P. Birnell, 94, of Walton, went home to be with the Lord at 8:55 am Wednesday, December 18, 2013 at Memorial Hospital in Logansport.  She was born October 5, 1919 in Winamac to Glenn and Susie Thompson.  She first married Leroy Tharp and he preceded her in death, she then married John H. Birnell and he also preceded her in death in 1983.  She was a homemaker and loved her family.  She enjoyed crochet, fishing, playing piano, guitar, traveling and was an avid gardener.   She is survived by her daughter, Cheryl L. Jones, Walton; son, Royce K. Tharp, Kewanna; son Ernest Birnell, Logansport; dau, Nancy Keith, Deer Creek and son Mark Allen Birnell, Walton.  She is also survived by several grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents first and second husbands, three sons, Edgar G. Tharp, Roger Tharp and John Michael Birnell, four brothers and two sisters.   Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, December 24th at 11:00 am at Murray Weaver Funeral Home in Galveston with Pastor John Newman officiating. Burial will follow at Winamac Cemetery in Winamac.  Visitation will be held from 4 – 8 pm Monday, Dec. 23rd at Murray Weaver Funeral Home in Galveston.
