Helen L. Wendling Gunter

July 28, 1917 ~ December 29, 2017 (age 100) 100 Years Old

Helen Wendling Gunter, 100, formerly of Walton, passed away at Golden Living Center on December 29, 2017.   She was born July 28, 1917 to Jess E. and Laura M. (Preiser) Wendling.  She married Harold Paxson in July of 1936; he preceded her in death in 1943.  She later married Paul D. Gunter on Jan. 22, 1944 and he preceded her in death on December 21, 1979.

Helen was a mother and homemaker.  She was a member of the Walton Christian Church for 89 years.  She also belonged to the Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter 184 and was a charter member of the Walton American Legion Auxiliary #418.

Surviving family include her son, P.D. Gunter, Kokomo, four grandchildren, Paula (Joe) Marshall, Logansport; Pam Foster, Mexico, IN; Patrick (Kelli) Gunter, Galveston; and Danielle Hughes, Galveston.  She is also survived by six great grandchildren, Mitch Michael, Kristi Michael and Justice Gunter of Peru; Joey Gunter, Belgium, WI; Caleb Hughes and Laura Hughes, Galveston and five great-great grandchildren.  She is also survived by a niece, Judy (Earl) Cain, Walton and nephews, Jim (Susie) Hammond, Walton and Randy (Nikki) Hammond, Kokomo.  She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, Harold Paxson and Paul D. Gunter, one son, Bill Paxson and sisters, Margaret W. Hammond and Virginia K. Kinnaman.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 2, 2018 at Murray Weaver Funeral Home in Galveston with Pastor Bill Collins officiating.  Private graveside services will follow at the Walton IOOF Cemetery.  A time of visitation will be held from 12:00 noon until the time of services at 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home.  The family has requested in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or the Walton Christian Church in her memory.
