After a courageous battle with cancer, James (Jim) Byrone Vest, 74, Galveston, passed away at his home on July 17, 2018 surrounded by his loved ones.
He was born on January 27, 1944, in Kingsport, Tennessee, to James Sr. and Lessie (Powers) Vest. On March 19, 1981, in Galveston, he married Deanna Vest (Rouch) and she survives.
He joined the Air Force in 1961 where he served tours in Japan, Korea, and Vietnam. He later retired from Grissom Air Force base in 1981. Following his active duty retirement, Jim continued his career at Grissom as a Federal employee where he retired in 2001.
Jim loved his family and was a very dedicated dad, husband, and grandpa. He was an extremely talented woodworker and enjoyed working on old cars. Jim was a devout Christian and a member of Chapel Hill Christian Church.
Jim is survived by his daughter, Teresa (William) Grace, Granger; and son, James (Anne) Vest, Sharpsville; and his grandchildren, whom he adored, Madeline and Olivia Grace; Hayden, Carson, Odessa, Estella and Nolan Vest. He is also survived by his sisters Monnie (Bob) Sadler, Hurricane, West Virginia; Janice (Joe) Bayes, Hager Hill, Kentucky; and sister-in-law, Sandra (Paul) Marsh, Church Hill, Tennessee.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Gene and Richard Vest.
Visitation will take place on Tuesday, July 24 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Chapel Hill Christian Church, 2600 West Alto Road, Kokomo, IN 46902. The funeral service, preceded by masonic and military rites, will be immediately following with Senior Minister Steve Allen officiating the funeral service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or to Chapel Hill Christian Church.
