Dr. George Bailey DVM Obituary

Dr. George I. Bailey, DVM, 84 of Galveston, died at 5:45 a.m. Tuesday, December 15, 2020 at Waterford Place Health Campus in Kokomo.  He was born April 6, 1936 in Flint, Michigan to George W. and Mildred (Brockway) Bailey.  He married Jean Ann (Riggle) Bailey on June 22, 1974 in Kokomo.  Jean preceded him in death on February 1, 2018.

Doc graduated from Flushing High School in Flushing, MI in 1954.  He earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1962 from Michigan State University.   He practiced large and small veterinary medicine in Galveston for many years before opening the Northeast Animal Clinic in Kokomo with partner Michael Maroney in the 1970’s.  He retired from Veterinary practice in 2002. For many years he raised and showed spotted hogs on a state and national level.  He was honored to be inducted to the National Spotted Swine Registry Hall of Fame in 2003.  Always needing to keep busy, he volunteered for many years in the swine barn at the Indiana State Fair.  Most recently, he continued to keep busy by hobby farming, bailing hay, and raising registered Angus cattle.  Doc was a 60-year member of the American Veterinary Medicine Association, the Loyal Order of the Moose, the Galveston American Legion, the American Angus Association and the EITipWa Tractor Club.

Surviving family include his children, George A. Bailey of Washington D.C.; Beth (Dave) Jump, Walton, IN; Dr. Gail (Leon Clay) King, Aspen, CO; Mary Bailey, West Palm Beach, FL; step-daughters, Kathy Roper, Belleville, IL; Cheryl Butler, Kokomo, IN; and Teresa Boyer, Kokomo, IN.  He is also survived by a sister, Elenore (Duane) Roeske, Eugene, OR and sisters-in-law, Barb Bailey, Swartz Creek, MI and Janet Riggle, Bunker Hill, IN, ten grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren.  Doc was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Jean Ann Bailey; brother, James Bailey; stepdaughter, Becky Mann; son-in-law, Tom Roper; Brothers-in-law, Dick Riggle, Don Riggle and Tyke Riggle; sister-in-law, Loretta Bennett, and mother-in-law, Mabel Riggle.

Private family services will be held at Murray Weaver Funeral Home in Galveston on Saturday, January 2, 2021 with Rev. Bill Collins officiating.  Burial will follow in the Galveston Cemetery.
