Richard L. “Dick” Baker, 92, of Kokomo, passed away at 6:00 a.m. Thursday, October 24, 2019 at the home of his daughter in Galveston. He was born December 23, 1926 to Lex and Alta Baker. He married Clara Jean Sommers on April 6, 1946. She preceded him in death on June 19, 2014. Together, they celebrated 68 years of marriage.
Dick graduated from Howard Township High School in 1945. After graduation he worked for Stellite Corp. retiring in 1986. He enjoyed traveling with his wife Jeanie, hunting, fishing and bluegrass music festivals with his family and friends. He was skilled at building custom musical instruments especially guitars, mandolins, five string banjo’s and fiddles. He gave numerous instruments away to encourage young inspiring musicians with their love for music.
Surviving family include his two daughters, Diana (Bud) Fields of Galveston and Sharon (Jim) Golliher of Converse. Grandchildren include, Staci (Terry) Brown of Zionsville; Scott (Kim) Fields of Riverton, Utah; Jamie Golliher and Jessica (Jim) Martin. Nine great grandchildren, Kristi (Phil) Gurule, Colton (Laura) Zeck, Kensi (Travis) Yoakum, Kassi Zeck, Conner Zeck, Caden Zeck, Joey Brown, Whitney Sperry, and Brandon Sly and Camden Martin. Seven great great great grandchildren, Karrington and Lakelyn Lund, Gentry Gurule, Leonny and Emmett Zeck, Cohen Zeck – Wright and Crew Yoakum.
A celebration of Dick’s life will be held with a family gathering next summer during the Bean Blossom Bluegrass festival he attended for over 50 years. Murray Weaver Funeral Home has been entrusted with his arrangements. www.murrayweaverfuneralhome.com
