Jonas L. Miller, 80, of Tavares, Florida and Galveston, Indiana, passed away Saturday, January 14, 2017 at Cornerstone Hospice in Tavares. He was born March 18, 1936 in Shipshewana, Indiana to Abraham “Abe” and Mary (Beachy) Miller. He married Gail S. Spradlin on Nov. 13, 2009 and she survives.
Jonas graduated from Northwestern High School in Howard County. He was especially proud of being on the Northwestern Basketball team that won the Kokomo sectional championship in 1955. He was a little league coach for many years and enjoyed mushroom hunting, snowmobiling and taking vacation cruises. He was a member of Graceway Presbyterian Church in Leesburg, FL and also attended Upper Deer Creek Church in Galveston. He was a truck driver for Interstate Freight Trucking Company and a vegetable farmer for many years. He enjoyed watching or attending any sporting event and was an avid red sox fan. He battled and overcame many health issues over the last few years. Jonas and his wife Gail have been snow birds since 2008 spending the winters in Florida. He was a loving husband, father and grandpa. He enjoyed people and never met a stranger.
Surviving family include his wife Gail S. Miller, Galveston, IN; sons, Gary and Brian Miller of Kokomo, IN; and Mark and wife Kristy Miller of Galveston, IN and a step son Dan Sharp. His grandchildren include, Colby (Allie) Miller, John Brian Miller, Devin Miller, Meagan (Matt) O’Donnell and Tiffany Miller. His great grandchildren include Hudson and Aiden O’Donnell. He is also survived by brothers, Wilbur (Judy) Miller and Glen Ray “Fritz” (Jeanie) Miller and sister, Linda (Jason) Bontrager. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins and former wife Alma Miller of Kokomo. Jonas was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter Janet Nix and his wives Winifred Miller and Sylvia Miller.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 21st at Upper Deer Creek Church with Rev. Joe Coffin officiating. Burial will follow at Mast-Hensler Cemetery in Howard Co. Visitation will be held from 4 – 8 p.m. Friday, January 20th at Murray Weaver Funeral Home in Galveston and 1 hr. prior to services at the Church on Saturday.
